Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology): Ni Haixia Tian Ji Guide

OracleEast's evergreen Zi Wei Dou Shu guide: twelve palaces, stars, Four Transformations, timing, Ni Haixia Tian Ji school boundaries, calculator limits and practitioner method.

OracleEast Zi Wei pillar · revised 7 August 2026

Direct answer: Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数), often translated as Purple Star Astrology, maps a natal chart across twelve palaces and reads stars, palace relationships, Four Transformations, ten-year periods and annual timing together. OracleEast uses the Ni Haixia Tian Ji (天纪) teaching line; it does not silently mix Zi Yun or Zhongzhou rules into the same judgment.

Page role: This is OracleEast’s evergreen Zi Wei method pillar. The separate Zi Wei chart calculator casts a chart; the Ni Haixia Tian Ji guide documents the school boundary in more detail.

What a Zi Wei chart contains

The chart organizes life domains into twelve palaces, including Life, Siblings, Spouse, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends/Servants, Career, Property, Fortune and Parents. A palace is never judged from its label alone. The analysis weighs its major and supporting stars, the opposite palace, the connected three-direction structure known as san fang si zheng (三方四正), benefic and challenging influences, and the timing layer.

OracleEast’s Ni Haixia Tian Ji boundary

The Ni-school approach emphasizes the original nature of the stars, the twelve-palace structure, three directions and four alignments, major periods and annual activation. OracleEast keeps this framework explicit. Techniques from other modern schools may be valuable in their own context, but they are not blended into a Tian Ji reading without naming the source and the conflict.

LayerQuestion it answersCommon error
Natal palaces and starsWhat is the chart’s baseline structure?Calling one star universally good or bad
Three directions and four alignmentsWhich connected palaces reinforce or constrain the topic?Reading one palace in isolation
Four TransformationsWhere do impetus, authority, recognition and obstruction move?Treating a transformation as a guaranteed event
Ten-year periodWhich life domain and structure become foregrounded?Ignoring the natal baseline
Annual timingWhat is activated within the current period?Reading one year without the period

A seven-step reading sequence

  1. Verify birth date, time, place, time zone and the chart-calculation convention.
  2. Locate the Life and Body palaces and identify the principal stars.
  3. Read each relevant palace with its opposite and three-direction connections.
  4. Weigh supporting stars, challenging stars and the Four Transformations.
  5. State the natal structural judgment before adding timing.
  6. Layer the current ten-year period and annual activation.
  7. Separate high-confidence evidence, conflicting evidence and unknowns; translate the result into observable questions.

What Purple Star Astrology can and cannot answer

Zi Wei can organize recurring themes across career, relationships, resources, movement, family and personal development. It can highlight which domains are structurally connected and when a domain becomes more active. It cannot guarantee a promotion, diagnose disease, prove compatibility, or replace legal, financial, medical or psychological advice.

Example: why the Migration Palace is not just travel

A strong interpretation of the Migration Palace considers movement, external environment, visibility outside the familiar setting and the relationship between the person and wider networks. It must be read with the Life Palace and connected palaces. One difficult star does not automatically mean “do not move”; the question is whether the external environment supplies opportunity, pressure, exposure or instability and how the timing layer activates it. See the Migration Palace guide for the full example.

Calculator vs practitioner interpretation

The calculator can place palaces and stars consistently from the input data. The practitioner must resolve the hierarchy among palace structure, star nature, connected palaces, transformations and timing. If birth time is uncertain, the reading should compare plausible charts and label which conclusions change.
